Denver mayor, officials connect for Larimer Street bridge completion

Denver mayor, officials connect for Larimer Street bridge completion 1662 1247 Hamon Infrastructure

Denver officials, including Mayor Mike Johnston, connected on Wednesday to celebrate completion and opening of the upgraded $7 million Larimer Street bridge, which connects Speer Boulevard and 14th Street.

The project replaced the 64-year-old bridge with increased space for people to walk, bike, pedal and skate. Added were 12-foot-wide sidewalks, two-way protected bikeway, pedestrian lighting, seating, public arts and greenery. The bridge remains a two-way, one-lane street.

Larimer Street stretches over Cherry Creek, a popular walking and bike path along downtown Denver’s longest creek.

With Johnston to cut the ribbon were Downtown Denver Partnership CEO Kourtny Garrett, District 10 Councilman Chris Hinds, Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) Executive Director Adam Phipps and Auraria Higher Education Center CEO Colleen Walker.

“The bridge contributes to our goal of getting more folks walking and rolling downtown,” Johnston said in a statement. “This project will make it easier and safer for Denverites to travel between the Auraria Campus and Downtown, two critical economic and entertainment centers for our city, while contributing to our goal of activating downtown with beautiful and accessible public spaces.”

Denver contracted with Hamon Infrastructure to construct the new bridge. It was completed in less than one year.

“It’s amazing to see the transformation that has occurred along this stretch of Larimer Street,” Hinds said. “We have a new bridge over Cherry Creek that will serve the area for decades to come and more room for people to walk and roll between downtown and the campus, making both locations more accessible to all.”

The bridge replacement, along with its streetscaping efforts, “links businesses and residences of the downtown area on one side, with three institutions of higher learning on the other,” Denver Transportation and Infrastructure officials said in a statement.

Area education facilities include Community College of Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver and University of Colorado Denver — all located on Auraria Campus.

“We are thrilled that Connecting Auraria supports a space with a distinct identity as an urban campus with vital gateways, vibrant activations, and connections to its surrounding city,” Walker said. “More than a beautiful new state-of-the-art bridge, the corridor improves the student experience and safety on Larimer Street … and will continue accelerating the merger of the two sides of the Cherry Creek.”

Garrett, downtown Denver’s development czar, added: “Connecting Auraria is a powerful example of the importance of strengthening connections between downtown neighborhoods. This bridge represents remarkable collaboration between DOTI and the community to bring to life a bold design that truly prioritizes pedestrian safety and active mobility while establishing a greater sense of place and fluidity between the central business district and AHEC.”

In addition to added amenities, the bridge replacement also affects water quality.

“The planters on the north side of Larimer Street receive stormwater off the street, cleaning it before it makes its way to Cherry Creek, and serve to cool the environment and mitigate urban heat,” Phipps said. “In addition, new lighting strung across the bridge will serve as a beacon to welcome people to this space, help them navigate at night and make the area safer.”

Denver Kicks Off Broadway Multimodal Improvements

Denver Kicks Off Broadway Multimodal Improvements 480 360 Hamon Infrastructure

Representatives of the City and County of Denver, CDOT, and the city’s bicycling and business communities gathered October 10, 2022 to kick-off the installation of multimodal improvements on South Broadway.

Enhancements to add a new two-way protected bikeway, shorten pedestrian crossing distances, upgrade signal infrastructure for greater safety

DENVER – Representatives of the City and County of Denver, Colorado Department of Transportation, and the city’s bicycling and business communities gathered today to officially kick-off the installation of multimodal improvements on Broadway from 7th to Center Avenues that will improve safety for all along the corridor.

Highlights of the improvements being made over the next 12 to 18 months include installation of a two-way protected bikeway starting at 7th Avenue near the Cherry Creek Trail, down to Center Avenue, creating an important new north/south connection in the city’s bike network. Intersections along the stretch will receive curb ramp improvements, infrastructure to shorten crossing distances for pedestrians, and upgraded traffic signals with lights positioned over each vehicle travel lane, making stops more visible and noticeable to drivers.

“With these improvements, we’re creating a better and safer Broadway for all who travel the corridor, providing greater access to local restaurants, shops, and other destinations by bike and on foot and enhancing the connections between neighborhoods on both sides,” said Adam Phipps, Executive Director of Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure.

Denver has contracted with Hamon Infrastructure to deliver the $14.3M improvement project using a combination of voter-approved Elevate Denver Bond funding and a $9.6M grant from Safer Main Streets Initiative in collaboration with CDOT and the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG).

“The Safer Main Streets Initiative supports infrastructure projects that improve safety and accessibility along urban routes, and this Denver project aligns with CDOT’s goals to improve conditions for travel and protect our most vulnerable roadway users such as pedestrians and cyclists,” said Jessica Myklebust, CDOT Region 1 Transportation Director.

The Broadway Multimodal Improvement Project is the culmination of extensive community input and planning that included a pop-up bikeway demonstration in 2015, followed by installation and testing of a two-way protected bikeway on a smaller stretch along the corridor to evaluate safety and operations. Collaboration with community and businesses has been a key component in evaluating a bikeway for Broadway and preparing for permanent infrastructure improvements.

“After years of advocacy from small businesses on Broadway and citizens all across District 7, we will finally have a premiere bicycle facility on Broadway,” said District 7 Denver City Councilman Jolon Clark. “This bike lane will make Broadway safer for all users, enhance the quality of life for our citizens, and give a big economic boost to our small businesses on the corridor as it connects to Denver’s broader bike network.”

The bikeway itself will be a first of its kind for Denver, incorporating two-way travel along a 1.5-mile stretch of roadway with vertical protection. Concrete curbing and a row of parking will separate the bikeway from the vehicle travel lanes.

“People in Denver want high quality, safe bike lanes so that they can choose to ride a bike more often and more places, and protected bike lanes create an attractive and viable travel option for people of varying ages and skill levels,” said Piep van Heuven, Director of Government Relations for Bicycle Colorado. “Statewide, we’re seeing investments in bike lanes making a positive difference in safety, property values, and boosting business.”

Additional enhancements that will be made to the corridor include streetscaping, including improving the landscape areas and growing conditions for street trees. Wayfinding signage will be provided to help guide people to multimodal connections along the corridor. Public art locations have been identified for areas along the corridor to complement Broadway’s unique character.

“We’re excited for these safety improvements to start and want to welcome everyone to Broadway while the work is underway,” said Luke Johnson, President of the Broadway Merchants Association. “The Broadway Merchants Association will continue to work closely with our partners at the City and County of Denver and Hamon Infrastructure to ensure that more than 100 small businesses on Broadway remain informed throughout this significant infrastructure update. While the era of the internal combustion motor comes to a close and electrification enters, it is our collective hope that the Broadway Bikeway will be a safe and lasting alternative for the next century of transportation on this historic and storied corridor of Denver.”

Work will begin first along the west side of Broadway, with enhancements to multiple intersections from 7th Avenue to Center Avenue. Phase 2 will then address the east side of Broadway, with intersection and infrastructure enhancements and addition of the protected bikeway. Phase 3 will complete final touches such as landscape plantings and permanent striping.

During installation of the multimodal improvements over the next year, people can expect access to businesses to be maintained, the shifting of travel lanes to support safety for all, including construction crews, intermittent lane closures, and sidewalk detours as needed. Background

The North I-25 Express Lanes project, from 120th Avenue to Northwest Parkway/E-470, is a $97.5 million project that will improve safety, capacity and user choice for a rapidly developing region.

This project will continue the previous Express Lanes project, which was completed on I-25 between US 36 and 120th Avenue, and extend the Express Lanes to Northwest Parkway/E-470. The project will add capacity on I-25 up to Northwest Parkway/E-470 and construct a new asphalt surface from 120th Avenue to SH 7. Motorists can expect the roadway to be in its final alignment by winter 2018.

“I-25 plays a critical role in the quality of life and economic vitality in the growth of northern Colorado,” said Paul Jesaitis, CDOT Region 1 transportation director. “This stretch is one of the most congested portions of highway in the Denver metro area, seeing an average daily traffic volume of 174,000 vehicles per day.”.

Construction will take place Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with periodic night and weekend work. Motorists can expect various lane closures on both northbound and southbound I-25 as well as periodic ramp closures. Traffic will be maintained during peak travel times throughout construction.

“Ultimately, this project will positively impact motorists, providing benefits to local businesses, neighborhoods as well as through traffic,” said Jesaitis. “We’re excited to get started.”

CDOT, Hamon Infrastructure, the City of Westminster, the City and County of Broomfield, the City of Northglenn, the City of Thornton and Adams County would like to thank motorists for their patience during construction and remind drivers to slow down in the cone zone.

About Express Lanes: Express Lanes increase roadway capacity and help to manage congestion on the highways. The use of toll pricing during peak travel times reduces delays, manages congestion and maintains reliable travel times. Express Lanes currently are open between 120th Ave. and US 36 on North I-25 and, US 36 from Denver to Boulder and on the I-70 Mountain Express Lane. Leaf Bridge Update

Leaf Bridge Update 2560 1919 Hamon Infrastructure

The Lone Tree Leaf Bridge, a pedestrian bridge located in Lone Tree Colorado was completed in early 2018.  The eye-catching bridge is located at near I-25 and Lincoln.  A crossing under construction at Lincoln Avenue will eventually carry light rail trains south from Denver to a stop near Sky Ridge Medical Center. The Leaf Bridge is an environmentally friendly reminder that Lone Tree is committed to expanding the light rail and other means of public transportation to make it easier to commute around the city.  In 2019, light rail stations are expected to be functional and the Leaf Bridge will signal those stops.  Aside from future light rail commuters, the bridge is expected to be a popular spot for dog walkers, cyclists, runners and those taking a stroll around the city.  Hamon Infrastructure was proud to be a part of the construction of such a unique piece of work.

The official opening ceremony was held by the City of Lone Tree on June 28th.
