14th Ave Bridge Replacement

Project Overview

As part of the Elevate Denver Bond Program, which voters approved in 2017 to fund critical improvements to infrastructure, Denver’s Department of Transportation & Infrastructure (DOTI) replaced the 60-year-old bridge on West 14th Avenue between northbound and southbound Speer Boulevard to preserve and extend the life of the bridge. DOTI also made safety improvements for those who walk and bike over the bridge, which included building wider sidewalks and a new, raised bicycle track over the 14th Avenue Bridge. In addition, crews upgraded the traffic signals and pedestrian ramps on West 14th Avenue at the intersections of Northbound and Southbound Speer Boulevard.

Background

Older bridges were built for a 50-year service life. The bridge structure at 14th over Cherry Creek is at least 60 years old. New bridges are designed for a 75-year service life. Annual maintenance and repair has become cost prohibitive for this structure. In addition to the new bridge, DOTI will enhance the area with improved traffic signals, ADA ramps, wider sidewalks, and a raised bicycle cycle track over the bridge.
