Arapahoe Road, between Waco Street and Himalaya Way, was a two-lane roadway designed to handle 20,000 vehicles per day but was handling about 23,900 vehicles per day with significant peak hour volumes. Traffic along this busy segment of Arapahoe Road was anticipated to increase even more in coming years. The City of Centennial, along with project partners Arapahoe County, Southeast Metro Storm Water Authority (SEMSWA), and the City of Aurora, collaborated on a plan to increase capacity and improve safety and mobility through this segment of the corridor.
Background
About 1.5 miles of Arapahoe Road between Waco Street and Himalaya Way was reconstructed and widened from the existing two-lane section to an interim four-lane section, with six-lane sections on the east and west ends. Three existing signalized intersections were replaced with new signals. Several existing drainage outfalls along the project were redesigned and constructed in coordination with the Southeast Metro Storm Water Authority (SEMSWA). Additionally, overhead electric lines on both sides of Arapahoe Road were relocated to accommodate the ultimate roadway section. The design was coordinated with Intermountain Rural Electric Association (IREA).
