Background

Mayor Michael Hancock created the North Denver Cornerstone Collaborative (NDCC) in 2013 to align six major redevelopment projects in the River North, Globeville, Elyria, and Swansea neighborhoods. Those projects include the I-70 east redevelopment; River North/South Platte; 3 transit lines/4 stations; Globeville, Elyria, and Swansea neighborhood plans; Brighton Boulevard; and the National Western Center. The vision drew one step closer to fruition in November with the completion of the Brighton Boulevard Multimodal Improvements Project from 44th Avenue to Race Court. This stretch of Brighton runs adjacent to the redevelopment of the National Western Center (NWC) and it opened in time for the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo in January 2020.

Project Benefits

The overall goal for the investment in Brighton Boulevard was to convert a historic back door into a new front door to welcome those visiting Denver. The first phases of Brighton Boulevard reconstructed the roadway to facilitate access to Downtown Denver by providing defined roadway, bicycle, and pedestrian use areas. This project specifically focused on extending the multimodal corridor to help residents and visitors access the NWC area, and creates connections to significant destinations such as the National Western Center and the Denver Coliseum. In addition to the multi-modal aspect of the project, the design includes a flex lane that can be converted from its normal parking operation to a travel lane during large events. This marks the last segment needed to connect these destinations to RTD’s North-Metro Commuter Rail Line at the NWC Station, and it offers Denver’s first fully protected bike lane intersection at the intersection of 47th and Brighton Boulevard.
